thai food to go - 141 chapel st windsor 9510 2112
you know, i just wasn't going to review this place at all... but then i went to the bathroom. you know how some places have like cool images to denote male and female bathrooms? la camera at southbank, for example, has some vague suggestive artworks, and i always have to look more than once. i think it's supposed to be a womb on the ladies' door. anyway. box, on the other hand, has symbolised the male and female genitalia. yes, this is box, where you have to take the lift to the third floor to get to the bathroom. but wait, this is a review on the thai place on chapel st. and guess what they have on their bathroom doors? should i give you a minute?? ok, ok....
.... it's homer and marge simpson. is that cool, or is that cool? yup, it's cool. no need to look twice here.
so, even though the bathroom doors were definitely the best thing about this place, i guess i should tell you what else is here. their mission statement is listed on the take away menu (too cheap for business cards) as "cook good foood. sell it. have a couple of beers after work." i like it. seems to be working for them, too- the food is cheap and mostly good here, although admittedly i didn't see any employees downing cold ones. apparently you should steer clear of the spring rolls, as they're full of carrot. everything i ate tasted good though- tofu, noodles, fried rice, peanut curry... i ate so much, i could barely fit in my baileys latte at globe. (how come i haven't reviewed that place yet?) i did try a coffee here at the thai place and it was rubbish, so don't bother with that either.
the decor is very mismatched retro- and it could be in a cool way (this is chapel st, darling, and retro is as retro does), but actually it's more in just a cheap arse type of way. the drinks menu comes in a cutesy photo album type booklet, although there's nothing impressive on the wine list. so, no wine, no coffee- stick with the drinks in the fridge, like guava-flavoured soft drink.
of course, you'll need an english teacher in order to be able to converse with the waiters, because it's quite clear that english is their second language. don't expect anything above grade 2- yes, i'll have the tofu. yes, tofu. see this here, tofu. yes, tofu. have you got that? tofu.... it just so happens that i had one with me tonight. (an english teacher that is- tch!) no, no, you can't borrow her, she's mine- get your own if you want to eat here, eh? they deliver too, if you live close by. i wonder how you'd go giving your order over the phone when you can't point at the menu though...
