basilico - 180 bridport street albert park 3206 9699 4288

i've heard about basilico (incidentally, the male form of the basilica) in albert park but i've never been there. it used to be a hardware store, owned by the greek family who own most of albert park. i can't say that the hardware store was any good but basilico is pretty impressive when you walk in.

it was fucking loud, that much i can say. it's very definitely a family restaurant so don't go there if you are on a first date, hard of hearing, hate kids or want to walk away with your hearing intact. and the smaller the child the more piercing the scream so try to position yourself away from the little ones.

'i just want to say...!'
'what?! what?!!'
'i really...i really like you!! i like you!! really!!'
'you want the veal???!! you bastard!!!!!'

and so on...

but it's an italian pizza restaurant. sure they do other things like fish and steak, but (and i've said this before), if they can't spell it, they can't cook it. the pizza was very good and the pasta looked good too. the staff are...average. don't get me wrong, they are enthusiastic, just a little slow in getting my wine after three attempts. but it might have been all the noisy kids. hell, i'd be ready to lock a few of them up in the cellar so the staff must be fucking saints if they put up with this for more than a few nights. then again, maybe i'm getting old...nah!!!!

it's not a bad place and i hate to be middle of the road on anything. if you've got kids and are partially deaf (or desire to be) it's a good place to go on the weekend. if you like somewhere you can hear your significant other talk, maybe skip it.
