moroccan soup bar - 181 st georges road fitzroy 3056 9482 4240

this place is scary. scary food, scary people. there's no menu and don't dare ask for one. a scary woman who shouts a lot will sit at your table and demand to know what you want. it's not personal, just the way a moroccan restaurant works. your order is yelled across the kitchen by the big scary woman. i see lots of cringing and cowering in the kitchen.

the food comes out fast, probably because we were stunned into saying yes to the first thing she suggested. on second thoughts it's probably the only thing they have made. if she's scary and bad enough the customers will never get past the first item. if you're oil-phobic better skip the food. there's probably no oil in the tea although i can't say we checked. we had the mixed starter which is a euphemism for bread, dips and unidentified veggies. there were more choices i'm sure but see scary woman reference above. we had seven veggies on couscous for the serious eating bit. pretty basic but good. they have soup, lots of soup from what we saw around us, maybe next time.

in short, be prepared for a woman sitting at your table telling you what you want in a way that indicates if you object you'll be dragged across the table by your nose hairs. on second thoughts that could be any normal couple on a saturday night. not expensive, we didn't eat enough of the food to evaluate it properly but it seemed basic but good. bring shy, nervous people here for a good laugh.
