new new chapel bakery

well, clearly a lot of other people thought the same. the new new owner has reintroduced the artisan breads and has put in a kitchen (i'm reliably informed). very good to hear! the old old chapel was all about the bread and good coffee and i'm glad to see the new new chapel owner gets that. kudos to you! actually, my daughter recently bought some delectable cakes for a birthday celebration - very nice. give chapel a try again and buy some bread. actually, you know what? leave all the bread for me!

ok, i've fucking had it! the answer to my question 'are you doing breakfast' is not 'sure, what would you like'. it's 'well, we're new here, we can't really take orders very well, we're disorganised, we don't really know how to do a simple poached eggs, mushroom, spinach and tomato, but what the fuck, we'll give it a bash anyway. if you don't like it (and i'm thinking you won't because you look like you have half an idea about what you want), we won't charge you. how would that be?'. my answer would have been 'i'm outta here. life is too short to be someone elses experiment'. i hate it when i'm right about these things.

sure, underwhelming would be a nice way to say everything sucked but i'm going to put it out there and say it sucked. crappy eggs (seriously, how can you fuck up a poached egg?! there's hot water, an egg, and, well, that's about it. tomato was undercooked, spinach overcooked. and I got the wrong coffee. is it just me? have I set the bar too high? these guys probably shouldn't try anything past a pie warmer until they get the concept of managing orders.

first they ditched the wonderful bread they used to sell (a cost reduction, no doubt). this is a new low, however. i'm running away to a better place, a happier place, where a decent breakfast and good coffee is not a constant challenge.

  1. went to cafe chapel Saturday morning and the coffee was the best I have had for a long time and they give you a decent big mug. the salmon baguett was yummy the waitress that served me had a smile on her face - very refreshing and not only that it was cosy and clean. I will be back.
  2. not sure if you went to the same place i did, but i'm a regular there. the new owner has made massive improvement to the place and only just put in a kitchen (from my understanding). so if they did make you breakfast it would have been impressive and a very tough effort with no kitchen, even if it wasn't great. the bread you are talking about 'that great bread' you said they got rid off, was just recently re-introduced as the previous owner that lasted i think around 4 months got rid of it. as for the coffee they are now serving a new coffee that is one of, if not the best in the street. as i was sitting drinking mine 3 people went to the counter and commented on how good the coffee was 2 of them bought beans to take with them. maybe you should give the place anther go as for the first week he was there i can admit the service wasnt great, but i'm sure the first week in a new business cant be too easy.
  3. see my new review at the top. thanks for the heads up!
