amello - st kilda sea baths 10-18 jacka boulevard st kilda 3182 8598 9055

it's a cafe. it's a bar. it's a restaurant. it's a bar. wait, i've been here before. i'm really not quite sure what amello wants to be but i suppose if you have an uninterrupted view of a glorious sunset over melbourne on a sunday evening with a glass of wine, who really gives a crap. we scored the table on point, the one right next to the chain link fence surrounding the next round of 'improvements' for st kilda. really, if they'd just leave the bloody place alone we could all just get along with enjoying it. i'm hoping they get it done and get rid of the fence as quick as possible. as it turned out, i paid little attention to the sunset as it was - i had a distraction.

anyway, back to amello. funny thing about me and waiters. i kind of expect them to, well, wait. when i asked for a wine list from one of them, his response was along the lines of 'if i must'. i later found out that he had been working since 7am that morning so kudos to him for not screaming 'bloody customers' and then going off to find a cat to kick. you just never know...

i am tipping that a single glass of wine each over an hour and a half is not what amello open her doors for. i think it's a she, there's a chick in bathers on the back of the business card. i didn't sample to food (but am reliably informed the the claim to server 'the best breakfast in melbourne' is an ambitious one and i wasn't really enthralled with the service. in fact, apart from the glass of wine and wonderful company, i really have no basis to make any judgement on amello. i think you should all just go have a meal and write some comments here about your experiences. is that lazy or what?

  1. i was so impressed with amello yesterday. not quite hand up the skirt impressed but, you know, better than before. what started as lunch at 1pm became five hours of crapping on and meeting new people. i swear that the man behind the bar is jim eoin. i suggested that he learn some real jokes.

what with stolen cacti, new zealand wines, the setting sun and an antipasto platter for the gods, i now judge amello to be above the line! ah, they were pretty good. worth a visit but you might have to give the staff a little leeway. did i really say that?!
