bunyip - 313 coventry street south melbourne 3205 9682 5844
firstly, what sort of stupid name is bunyip? it's fucked, that's what it is. that's my professional opinion. and what the fuck is it with the dancing thing on the card?
i have to say though, breakfast was very good. if poached eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast are your thing, you could do a lot worse. we don't generally bang on about cafes with good breakfasts. and it's not going to start here. bunyip has a simple menu, all-day breakfast, it's not expensive so it's exactly what you want from a small cafe.
however, the interior looks like a kids playhouse. in fact bunyip is located in a small remodeled victorian weatherboard house with the front patio as an outside eating area. but the food is actually quite good and that's what's important. i particularly liked the german sausages - peenyweenies? i can't remember the name but it was some reference to penis, i'm sure. oh those crazy germans.
bunyip can't afford to be expensive. it's opposite the south melbourne market and it has to compete with two larger eateries only a few doors away. where the cafe on the corner has disorganised staff and confused people waiting inside and out for a table, bunyip seems to have a bit of space and is generally more relaxed. kids can probably make noise and beat each other up. now there's a selling point to parents of annoying little bastards - 'come to bunyip, we don't care if your child's a little asshole'.
overall, breakfast was good and the coffee was great. they have alcohol which always scores points.
