the city wine shop - 159 spring street melbourne 3000 9654 6657

why have i never been to the wine shop. or the european, for that matter. it's a question i'm still asking myself with no good answer. the wine shop is directly under the supper club and beside the european restaurant. the same guy owns all three (lucky fucker) and has basically cornered the market in cool. in the spring street area, anyway.

now i have to admit that my ability to make a careful and balanced decision was clouded by the fact that it was a first date. in fact my ability to do anything remotely resembling a review was crippled. perhaps permanently. but i digress, as is usually the case. let me try to recollect the wine shop experience and leave the others for another time. fact is, of course, that i was progressively more pissed from wine shop to restaurant to super club.

great drinks menu with an array of wine and particularly gins to surprise and delight. apparently the hendricks gin is the best but i'm not so sure about the idea of cucumber instead of lime. it all sounds a bit far-fetched to me. the staff are wonderful and actually know how to be bar staff which is a rarity. i definitely recommend wine shop just stay away from my table.

  1. cucumber in gin? i don't think they would get their arm across the bar. it's un-australian, that's what it is. bloody foreigners, coming over here with their cucumbers and trying to put them in my gin. there's a fucking reason we've never heard of a gin and cucumber or a 'g&c' as the gin-mafia would like you to call it. crazy drunk foreigners!
  2. regarding cucumber in gin. try a g&t using martin millers gin with cucumber and no lime. then try it the other way around. give it a try and post your thoughts
  3. you know, you're right. i made the move to cucumber and millers. but only millers, mind you. millers is now my absolute favourite gin. thanks, cakewalk!!
