i so wanted to like this fucking place. never a good sentence to start with. it just really got on my tits after a while. ok they have good, even great coffee. but a little thing called service wouldn't go amiss. it's always the same, though, isn't it. have a great idea - pay crap wages. why do it? why not do it right?

and do you know what really gave me the shits? a little sign at the counter where you pay saying - wait for it - cash only. in 2000 and fucking 8?!! i can understand some backward, retro-fuck-you-and-your-modern-appliances-we're-hippies place in brunswick street saying 'cash only'. you just wander three doors up and get some cash out of the nearest cash machine if you really want to join the dirty stinking hippies. but on the side of the yarra river between a cricket oval and a rowing club with not a convenience store or bank in sight? whose fucking bright idea was that?

i didn't find the food altogether too bad but the experience as a whole was underwhelming to say the least. at least the view and the coffee were good. but kanteen could be so much more. go along and add your voice to the crowd - what the fuck do you mean, cash only?!! and after all that i've gone and alienated the hippies. for shame!

    still no cards allowed and it's 2000 and fucking 9...almost 10! food still mheh, the staff try and i wish they were any good. sadly not. hippies.

    Hey I so wanted to like this f...ing place as well... And guess what?? I did. My coffee was awesome, full flavoured and well textured. Eggs, simple, well cooked and yummy. Service? Brisk and attentive. What kind of people don't carry a little cash?? Think about it.. Cash is king.

    Very disappointed today. I ordered poached eggs with spinach and tomato on rye. Not a complicated order. The eggs came out cold and felt like rubber. The spinach and tomato were not cooked (is it the only place in Melbourne ?). I was told they have one stove (an arga) and that they like to serve things fresh. They refused to cook it for me. Said it was new staff and they should have explained that they only cook meat on their "stove". No butter on the cold toast but they did produce some butter and jam in an effort to make amends. The attitude of the waiter left alot to be desired. I'm not going back and I wont recommend this place to my friends.
